What Wings, Water – and Jesus Teach Us About Life

The illustration is simple, almost childlike. Yet its message cuts straight to the heart.
A bird lies grounded, wings folded beneath its body.
A fish gasps on cracked, dry earth.
Both are out of place.
Both are powerless.
Not because they are broken—but because they are separated from what gives them life.
“A bird can’t fly without wings.
A fish can’t swim without water.
And a soul can’t reach Heaven without Jesus.”
That’s the truth this image quietly proclaims.
Created With a Purpose—and a Place
God created the bird for the sky and the fish for the water. Take either away from its natural element, and it doesn’t matter how strong or beautiful it is—it will not thrive. It will struggle. Eventually, it will perish.
The same is true for the human soul.
We were not created merely to survive, earn money, chase pleasure, or accumulate approval. We were created for relationship with God. When we try to live disconnected from Him, something deep inside us begins to dry out.
People often describe it as:
an emptiness
a restlessness
a quiet despair they can’t explain
We try to fill it with distractions, success, relationships, or ideology. But none of it gives life—only temporary relief.
Jesus Is Not an Accessory—He Is Essential
In today’s culture, Jesus is often presented as optional. Helpful. Inspirational. A spiritual add-on.
But the Gospel says something far more radical:
> “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6)
Jesus is not one path among many.
He is the water for the fish.
He is the sky for the bird.
He is life itself for the soul.
Without Him, we may exist—but we do not truly live.
Faith Is Not Weakness—It Is Alignment
The final scene in the image shows people kneeling in prayer. Not defeated. Not ashamed. But aligned.
Prayer is not a sign that we’ve failed.
It’s a sign that we’ve remembered who we are—and where life comes from.
When we kneel before God, we are not lowering ourselves; we are returning to our rightful place. Just as a fish belongs in water and a bird belongs in the air, the human soul belongs in communion with its Creator.
The Invitation Still Stands
The beauty of the Gospel is this:
Even a fish on dry land can be returned to water.
Even a grounded bird can take flight again.
Grace is always available.
If your soul feels dry, heavy, or tired—perhaps it’s not because you’re broken.
Perhaps you’re simply out of your element.
Jesus is calling you back to life.
Amen.
